Anime is not always about the Anime

I learned over time that having an Anime program is a good way to get teens into the library. I also learned that they don't always come for the Anime itself. I made a program that included a craft and anime viewing, and over time I noticed teens often kept doing the craft long after the movie had started. I also noticed many teens used this as a time to socialize, show off their art, and often come in costume. I took the opportunity to display new books, manga and "How to Draw.." and was often rewarded with an empty display by the end of the program.

I started with crafts that had an Asian theme. Here is a list of some of those crafts-
Origami Wall Scrolls
Candy Sushi
Desktop Zen Gardens
Glass Stone Anime Magnets
Paper Cherry Blossom Trees
Sushi Bead Cell Phone Charms
Watercolor Paper Koi Wind Socks
Laminated Anime/Manga Bookmarks
Decoupage Anime/Manga Light Switch Plates

We also served ramen, with chopsticks. We used large coffee pots for the hot water, and let teens serve themselves.

You don't need to purchase anime to show it. FUNimation runs a program called Operation Anime where you can request DVDs for club viewing. They usually only offer PG13 or TV14 rated episodes, but always make sure you check the ratings before you request it. It also doesn't hurt to watch it yourself first, if you have the time.
